"Tuesday, April 25, 2006 La Salle County has case of mumps By Kevin Caufield countyreporter@newstrib.com A probable case of mumps has been reported in La Salle County based on clinical symptoms examined by an area physician. In response, La Salle County Health Department officials are issuing a warning to people to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from catching the viral infection. Health department officials refused to reveal where the clinical symptoms were recorded citing patient confidentiality concerns because mumps is a communicable disease. “We’re encouraging the public to protect themselves like they would during the flu season,” said health department health educator Leslie Dougherty. Mumps is a viral infection of the salivary glands that spreads like the flu. Health department officials say it is important for citizens to cover their noses and mouths when sneezing or coughing, wash hands often and not drink from the same glass or share the same eating utensils with another person. Health department officials are asking people who suspect that they may have the disease or know someone who does to seek immediate medical attention and testing from their physician. Dougherty said one reason the disease is able to spread today is because immunization practices are just 90 percent -95 percent effective." www.newstrib.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&ArticleID=20265&SubSectionID=207
