Hit recording artists Smash Mouth, the Gin Blossoms and the Bacon Brothers, featuring actor Kevin Bacon, will headline an all-day concert scheduled Saturday, Aug. 12 at Illinois Valley Regional Airport ( www.airnav.com/airport/KVYS ) .
This is the second fund-raising concert organized this year by Lou’s LaGrotto, following the already-scheduled performance by the BoDeans ( www.bodeans.com/index.shtml ) on July 8 outside the Peru restaurant.
“We are donating again to Relay for Life,” said LaGrotto’s co-owner Merry Noonan.
Noonan said she is looking for local bands to weave into the daylong schedule. As of Monday, there was no start time for the program and Noonan was waiting for confirmation on a prospective sponsor. Mautino Distributing is confirmed as an event sponsor.
“We’ve had great response for this,” she said of her initial inquiries for sponsorship and supporting acts.
Smash Mouth (taken from the term “smash mouth football,” attributed to former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka), is promoting the forthcoming CD “Summer Girl.”
The San Jose, Calif.-based band has recorded hit singles including
1997’s “Walkin’ on the Sun,” and a remake of “I’m a Believer,” featured in the movie “Shrek” starring Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy.
The Gin Blossoms scored a hit record with the 1992 album “New Miserable Experience.” The album sold 3 million copies and launched five singles including the Top 10 hit, “Hey, Jealousy.”
Brothers Kevin and Michael Bacon have performed together since 1995. Michael Bacon is an accomplished musician and composer who won an Emmy award for his score to a 1993 documentary on the Kennedys.
Actor Kevin Bacon first graced the silver screen in the 1978 mega-hit “National Lamthingy’s Animal House” and has since appeared in a series of hit films including “Apollo 13,” “Footloose,” “A Few Good Men,” and “Mystic River.”
In 2005, Noonan celebrated the 30th anniversary of the landmark restaurant by bringing Blues Traveler to the Illinois Valley area for a wildly successful performance. Blues Traveler sold 5,700 tickets to the 2005 event and helped raise $27,000 for Relay for Life.
Encouraged by the success of the event, Noonan announced a follow-up show featuring the BoDeans — best known for “Closer to Free,” the theme song to TV’s “Party of Five” — and hinted that additional acts may be forthcoming."
