FROLF... it may not be proper English, but it is one of the newest activities taking over the Illinois Valley. Disc golf, played by throwing a specially-designed Frisbee into a disc catcher in the least amount of throws, has become popular for people of all ages. It's like regular golf except with Frisbees. The discs aren't childhood toy Frisbees though and it takes some technique to get them to fly straight. Frisbee golf discs look like a discus used for track but they fly a lot father and are a lot lighter. Frisbee golf players can use different discs depending on the distance from the disc catcher. You can purchase all of them at Walgreens's in Ottawa, called: "Frisbee Golf Discs". The endcap of discs even has a "Professional Disc Golf Association- PDGA" chart that describes which discs are best for beginner frolfers or avid Frisbee golf pros. It explains which discs are used in what circumstances and even which discs float in water, a key piece of information when playing along the Fox River in Ottawa ! Discs cost about $8 and even the most expensive is only $16. There are no fees to play like golf. It is unlimited, cheap fun. You don't need any special skills. Ottawa put in a Frisbee golf course by the Fox River in 2002 that the sport became popular in the Illinois Valley. The Ottawa course has 9 holes and according to the frolfing pros the course is of "average" difficulty. According to the "PDGA" Web site, there are 7 holes under 300 feet, 1 hole that is between 300-400 feet and 1 hole longer than 400 feet. It takes less than 30 minutes to play 9 holes. Most of the pars in Ottawa are between 3 and 5. There are a lot of trees to go around and the river is another obstacle. Lots of people dove into the river before to recover their discs.
